Causes of Dry Mouth

Causes of Dry MouthHave you been bothered with “dry mouth?” Did you know there are specific causes of dry mouth, and treatments which can help alleviate symptoms? Our Santa Monica dentist has information on the causes and treatments of dry mouth and will be happy to talk with you about your dental and oral issues.

All of us have had moments where our mouths have “gone dry,” especially when we are under great stress or fear. This is common and not to be worried about; it is simply the body’s response to perceived threats. You may also have experienced dry mouth upon waking, especially if you breathe through your mouth at night.

True “dry mouth” condition, however, is a much more long-term and debilitating disease. Known as xerostomia in the medical profession, dry mouth can be caused by a number of conditions. However, the most common reason for dry mouth is medications which stop the flow of saliva. These medications are often given in old age, so dry mouth has become synonymous with aging. However, this is merely a coincidence based on medication side effects, and not a normal part of aging.

If you continue with dry mouth without treatment, you may find that you suffer from more dental complaints. Saliva washes the teeth continually, carrying away bits of food and debris. When there is no saliva, cavities are more likely to develop. This can lead to the need for dental fillings.

If dry mouth and dental problems are not treated promptly, the problem may persist until root canals are necessary. Eventually, tooth loss may result.

Talk to our cosmetic dentist in Santa Monica about your dry mouth condition. We can help you find answers which will keep your teeth and mouth at their healthiest!
