Tooth Grinding and its Consequences
Tooth grinding, also known as Bruxism, is a common problem that afflicts many people. Typically, it is a subconscious activity brought on by excessive anxiety. A person can grind their teeth at any time of the day or night. Although the act of tooth grinding is similar to that of chewing food, it is very harmful. When a person eats, the chewing force is focused on the food, so everything is fine. However, when no food is present that same force is applied directly to the teeth.
Consequences of tooth grinding can range from mild issues to serious dental destruction. Signs may show up in the form of recurring headaches, cheek irritation, sensitive teeth or jaw pain. When the tooth grinding is not addressed, more damaging consequences usually evolve such as bruised or loose teeth, excessive wear of the teeth, worn out molar caps, or even chipping or breaking of the teeth. People who experience dental wear and oral infections as a result of tooth grinding, will need to see our cosmetic dentist in Santa Monica to correct the situation.
Once a person is made aware of the fact that they are grinding their teeth, they may stop on their own. However, others will need to be fitted with dental caps or night guards by Dr. Khoubnazar, our Santa Monica dentist, to eliminate the stress that is being placed on the teeth and to help reduce any other side effects. Teeth that are already damaged may require dental crowns, inlays and onlays.
