October has arrived, and Halloween is on its way! It’s time for fun costumes, trick or treating and loads of Halloween candy! We here at Smiles Santa Monica in Santa Monica, California know that it can be a challenge to help your family’s mouths stay healthy around Halloween. We support you having a fun time. It’s ok to eat candy, but it’s also important to have a plan. Here are some tips:
-It’s about timing: Keep your children’s candy in a special place and allow them to pick out one or two special treats to eat with their lunch and/or dinner. You see, the bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar and produce acid as a byproduct, which can harm teeth. However, if sugary treats are eaten with a meal, the other foods can help cancel out the effect of the acid.
-Keep up on oral hygiene: Help your family members to brush twice a day for two minutes each with fluoride toothpaste and floss each evening. Replace toothbrushes every 3-4 months or earlier if they are worn.
-Give out sugarless gum: After candy, pop in some sugarless gum. Chewing gum for 20 minutes stimulates saliva production which washes away bad bacteria and leftover food particles. You can even hand out sugarless gum to trick-or-treaters on Halloween to help other families.
